WMO supports the United Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process and every year participates in sessions of the Conference of the Parties (COP), by providing the latest scientific advice and information to governments, including on the state of the climate and greenhouse gas concentrations.
A top-level delegation from WMO will attend COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt from 6-18 November 2022. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The Egyptian presidency’s goals are framed around mitigation, adaptation, finance and collaboration. The COP27 action agenda focuses on implementation, mobilizing collective efforts for ambitious emission reductions from different sectors, enhanced transformative adaptation agenda on the ground, enabling flows of appropriate finance, and delivering on the ground on-time and at-scale.
At COP27, WMO will pursue the following priority areas:
Dedicated sessions at COP27 will be allocated for the Africa region, with the aim of furthering the understanding of challenges, solutions, and opportunities for the continent. Similarly, the role of regional cooperation, local governments and cities will be elaborated on as cross-cutting issues. Other initiatives and topics of interest, such as transport and waste, will be included in the conference programme.
