Dra. Luciana V. Gatti is the head of the Greenhouse Gases laboratory at INPE with the capability to quantify with high precision CO2, CH4, N2O, and CO. She coordinates the GHG group focused on determining the Amazon carbon balance focused on understanding the Amazonia’s role in the global carbon cycle. Using small aircraft to perform lower troposphere vertical profiles, during the last 20 years, the group had a very successful study in determining the Amazon carbon balance, with regional and temporal representation of long-time studies also providing the role Amazon carbon balance represents in the Global Carbon Budget. The group has international collaboration with NOAA(US), the University of Leeds (UK), Wageningen (NLD), and other universities and research groups. Dra Gatti was the first author of 3 Nature articles (2014, 2021, 2023), and in 2023 was chosen as one of the 40 Top Environmental Science Scientists in Brazil, published by Research.com.

The most important question today about the Amazon rainforest is: Which factor impacts it most (the strongest drivers)—global climate change or human actions inside the Amazon? The research group’s 14 years (2010-2023) of Amazon Carbon balance research indicate human actions inside the Amazon.
