8 September from 07:00 – 10:00 (UTC) in Maputo, Mozambique
The State of the Climate in Africa report provides authoritative scientific information on climate trends, extreme weather and its associated impacts, which are undermining human health and safety, food and water security and socio-economic development. It also highlights information on climate policies, mitigation and adaptation strategies implemented in Africa to cope with climate-related impacts.
The 2021 report is the third in the series and has a special emphasis on water. Increasing water consumption combined with more frequent droughts and heat events will put additional pressure on already scarce water resources.
Despite the increasingly extreme weather, 60% of people in Africa are not covered by early warning systems. At the request of the United Nations Secretary-General, WMO is spearheading an initiative to provide everyone on the planet with early warnings in the next five years.
The African Ministerial Conference on Meteorology (AMCOMET) is at the nexus of climate science and climate policies in Africa to support national mechanisms in delivering early warning systems.
