Hasegawa Naoyuki was appointed as Director-General of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) on 5 January 2021.
Mr Hasegawa earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tokyo in 1983 before starting work at JMA. He previously served the Agency as Deputy Director-General for Disaster Mitigation of JMA (2020-2021), Director-General of the Forecast Department (2019-2020), Director-General of the Observation Department (2017-2019), and Director-General of the Global Environment and Marine Department (2016-2017).
Mr Hasegawa has worked extensively with JMA in the management of meteorological services with a particular focus on planning and development. In recent years he has dedicated himself to the development of regional disaster mitigation capacity across Japan based on enhanced relations with municipal governments. Throughout his career, he has also actively participated in international activities within the frameworks of WMO, the ESCAO/WMO Typhoon Committee, and UNESCO/IOC.
Toward better meteorological services, Mr Hasegawa used his inauguration address to highlight the importance of JMA's contribution to social development through collaboration with various entities including government, academic and private organizations in a broad range of scientific and socioeconomic fields.- Focus was placed on the concept of meteorological services for dynamic and broad use toward safe, resilient, and vibrant living, which is the vision of the Agency set forth in JMA's strategy "Meteorological Operation Focusing on Science and Technology toward 2030" (a recommendation formulated by the Council of Transport Policy's Subcommittee on Meteorology and implemented by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism 2018).
