Hawa Abdulai

Hawa Abdulai is an Assistant Chief Scientific Officer in the Water Resources Management Unit of the Strategic Space Applications Department, National Space Research and Development Agency, Nigeria (NASRDA). Hawa’ s expertise lies in the application of remote sensing/GIS in water resources management. She has coordinated various water-related research works as well as been part of different interdisciplinary projects in the NRM division. She is also involved in capacity strengthening by training interns, assisting in training PG students and staff from other agencies in the application of Remote sensing and GIS in their different specialties. Some of the water-related projects she has been involved in are the Hydrological characterization and Impacts of Climatic Parameters on the Lake Chad Basin, Hydrological characterization and modelling of the Katsina Ala Basin, Precipitation trends in the Niger Basin using Satellite Altimetry. Some noteworthy interdisciplinary projects she has been involved in are Soil suitability Analysis for Cashew production in Nasarawa State, Nigeria, NASA Harvest and most recently, Land Information System for Imo state, Nigeria.  She is currently leading other scientists in her team to undergo further research and hydrological modelling of the Niger Basin. She has actively presented her research findings in both local and international conferences. Most of the research work she has been involved in has resulted in publications in reputable journals.  She is skilled in the use of various remote sensing and GIS software programs such as ArcGIS/QGIS, Erdas, ENVI, Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP) for data analyses and visualisation. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and a Master’s degree in Environmental Geology and Contamination from University of Portsmouth.
