Stories On Water
“Stories on Water” is an initiative featuring a series of inspirational talks designed to raise awareness and share knowledge on operational hydrology. In a series of events, experts from different backgrounds and fields of work share insights on hydrology and related topics, WMO’s work, and their professional experiences, as well as personal stories of resilience, action, and hope in the face of water-related challenges.
The first event, “High Flows: Stories on Water”, focused on flood forecasting, early warnings, and the vital role of effective communication in empowering communities to better respond to water-related disasters. It featured inspirational talks by:
- Ko Barrett, Deputy Secretary General, WMO
- Yuri Simonov, Deputy Director for Scientific Work, Hydrometeorological Center of Russia
- Milica Djordjevic, Head of Weather Watch, Hydrometeorological Service of the Republic of Srpska
- Ilias Pechlivanidis, Associate Professor and Senior Researcher, Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute
- Maria Kosonen, Junior Professional Officer, WMO
Floods are one of the most significant hydrometeorological hazards, and WMO plays a critical role in mitigating their impacts through initiatives like the Flash Flood Guidance System (FFGS) and the Associated Programme on Flood Management (APFM).
Looking ahead, the “Stories on Water” series will continue to explore a wide range of topics, providing a platform for experts to exchange knowledge and inspire action.
The “Stories on Water” initiative stems from the WMO Vision and Strategy on Hydrology.
